Magnetism: The Two-Faced Healer
Magnetism: The Two-Faced Healer
by Dr. Dean Bonlie            Source

Although Dr. Bonlie has a degree in dentistry, for the last seven years he has been involved in full-time
research, consulting and lecturing in biomagnetism. He is currently Chairman of the Scientific Committee
of the North American Academy of Magnetic Therapy. His theory on the action of magnetism on living
tissue has made him a widely accepted authority in this field and he is the inventor of several magnetic
devices for human use. For more information, phone (800) 265-1119.

Several years ago I participated in a series of monthly “Doctor Shows” on talk radio in New York City.
Hun-dreds of callers would phone in with questions on magnetism and health. One very disturbing call
went like this: “I purchased a magnetic sleep pad for my chronic fatigue. At first I thought it was an
answer to prayer! Then, after a few weeks I was unable to even get out of bed!” Another enthusiastic
caller recounted years of back aches… but, no longer. He had purchased a magnetic sleep pad and a
back belt.

These calls illustrate the level of confusion that surrounds the use of magnets for the treatment of pain,
low energy and sleep disorders. Some proponents advocate the use of the South magnetic pole, others
adamantly defend using only North pole energy, and yet another group proclaims the best results are
obtained by using both polarities.

Why is there such a disparity in response to magnetic therapy? To answer that question, we must
understand how magnetism affects our bodies. Let’s start at the very beginning - the atoms of the body.
Atoms are composed of even smaller particles, the largest of which are neutrons, protons, and
electrons.

It is a principle of physics that if a magnetic field in which an atom exists is increased, the velocity of the
electrons and protons will increase or decrease depending on the direction of the magnetic field and the
orbits of the particles. The outermost unpaired (valence) electrons are the ones that are shared to
makeup molecules which join to make cells that comprise the tissues of our bodies.

When the magnetic field passes through the atoms in the correct direction, it will increase their energy
state which in turn enhances the sharing of electrons. Also involved is increased precession or wobble
activity of some electrons depending on the relationship of their orbits to the magnetic field direction. All
this increased action is a catalyst to all the chemical reactions in the body. This may remind you fondly
or otherwise of high school chemistry experiments, where you heated a solution of two elements to
combine to form a new compound - heat being the catalyst or energy that made the elements share
their electrons.

The key to this activity seems to be direction of magnetic field. How does one know which is the right
direction? Surprise! The first clue is a sleeper, literally! Most cell division occurs during the first two
hours of sleep, as that is when the brain produces most of its human growth hormone. The valence
electrons (the critical ones) of the atoms of these new cells will orientate their direction of orbit
depending on the direction of magnetic field in which they divide. This will be whatever polarity is
occurring naturally from the earth where you live.

Most of us have not realized how critical the environmental amount of magnetism from the earth is to
life. And even less known is the fact that the geomagnetic field is drastically depleted from what is was a
thousand years ago. This depletion undoubtedly explains why people respond so well to magnetism -
we are in a deficiency state!

Because of the important body revitalization and rebuilding that occurs during sleep, a supplemental
unidirectional magnetic field (like the earth’s) is what will best give extra zing to those electrons of yours
at the right time, and in the right direction. It’s hard to improve on nature! If you are in the northern
hemisphere, the earth’s magnetic field is negative(-); in the southern, hemisphere it is positive(+). No
matter, in either location the earth’s field will be passing completely through your body in one direction.
This unidirectional supplementation is the first face of magnetism as a restorer of energy.

You may have friends who are sleeping on magnetic sleep pads that are giving bi-polar fields, and who
find that they have been beneficial. This is because magnetism as a healer indeed has two faces. We
can be helped not only by magnetism that is unidirectional, but also by magnetism that is bi-polar.
Weak, shallow bi-polar fields (having both negative(-) and positive(+) fields) with very little penetration
of the body, act to elicit an emergency response from the brain. This is because the other half of the
magnetic field is slowing down the electrons and protons, which signals a potential problem that the
body responds to as an emergency. It accomplishes this by sending more electromagnetic energy from
the brain and more blood flow to the whole area where the magnetic stimulus is applied.

The result is a net beneficial effect to that area. In effect, the response is similar to that created by
acupuncture. In fact, the Chinese have used magnetism in conjunction with acupuncture for centuries.
The only drawback to this type of treatment is that it is dependent upon a person’s vitality level. High
vitality - good response; low vitality - poor response. Also, too long a stimulus or too large a stimulus
can deplete overall vitality. When using bi-polar fields, it is wise to give the body a periodic rest and let
its vitality rebuild.

These same principles apply when using bipolar magnets individually or magnetic wraps on portions of
the body. Don’t use them longer than one month on the same body spot, and then allow another month
to pass before using magnets on the same spot. When placing a magnet on one part of the body,
energy (electrical flow) is being drawn from other parts of the body to compensate. This may leave
depleted areas more vulnerable to problems or disease. Another solution can be to use a pure negative
(-) magnetic sleep pad at night which helps rebuild vitality much faster and thus can keep up the level of
response to bipolar magnets used during the day.

Many mistakenly believe that if they place the negative(-) side of a magnet to their body, they are only
getting that one polarity. The nature of a magnet is that it must have both polarities, so there is always a
return field (the opposite polarity) around that magnet’s negative(-) surface. That reversing field will
have the stimulating effect just discussed.

The question then arises, “How is it possible to make a magnetic field like the earth’s (pure field) flowing
completely through the body in one direction?” It would seem that one would have to sleep on a single
magnet as big as a bed - not too practical, to say nothing of the comfort department! But by correct
engineering, individual magnets can be placed to create a unified field so they act like a single magnet,
yet have flexibility for movement and comfort.

Obviously, there are many brands of magnetic pads on the market claiming to have only negative(-)
field. They may have these magnets placed with the negative(-) side up, but if the magnets are too
small or placed too far apart or if you are too close to them, you will be getting the reversing fields in
your body which then draws down on your vitality in time.

As Chairman of the Science Committee of the North American Academy of Magnetic Therapy, I have the
opportunity to review data on thousands of treatments where magnets are used. I can say positively that
it is one of the most effective and safe treatments for pain and has also proven to be very helpful in
relieving many other chronic conditions.

At present there are several scientific studies underway to determine the effects of magnetism on
different disease conditions and sleep problems, as well as on the various types of magnetic sleep
pads. These will help provide an ongoing body of knowledge to give a broader understanding of the
function and relationship of magnetism to health.

Editor’s Note: A new study from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found that 22 out of 29 patients
(76 percent) who were treated with a real magnet reported improvement, compared with only four out of
21 (19 percent) who were treated with a dummy magnet. Moreover, among those who reported
improvement, the average decrease in pain score was 7 for the magnet group and only 4 for the dummy
group. Researchers speculated that the magnets caused changes in pain-receptor cells, provoked an
indirect response in the brain or affected the release of pain-diminishing body biochemicals called
enkephalins. The research is just one more indication that the human body is truly a marvelous
organism, home to an infinite number of chemical reactions and sensitive to a variety of subtle forces,
including magnetism. (Washington Post 12/12/97).
