Inside Spiritual Modality by Aaron Becker
Inside Spiritual Modality
My Personal Glimpse at Reiki
by Aaron Becker, Trend Leader, May 31, 2006
Reiki, or spiritually guided life force energy, is a holistic modality that takes on an individuality all
its own. The process is divergent from most medical processes in that it focuses on healing,
rather than the more common goal of curing that most modalities hold.
My own look at Reiki started as a skeptical one. Although only a glimpse, it resulted in some
interesting realizations. "Skepticism is healthy- with an open mind, see what develops," prompted
Susan Anderson, director of the Seeds for Change Wellness Center in New Britain.
As an introduction, Anderson invited me to one of her many Free Wellness Lectures, "Awaken
the Power of Your Healing Hands." The lecture is designed to give an overview of Reiki, which is
encouraged as a self-applied or practitioner-guided method of healing.
"Reiki is a Japanese-based healing modality, meant as a self-healing tool." said Anderson,
opening the seminar. Reiki is meant to follow the philosophy that every person has specific life
energy and that energy, given training, can manifest itself by coming out of the palms of the
hands. It also holds to the philosophy that some ailments restrict the energy flow, which runs to
and from seven main Chakra areas within the body.
The process is meant to free that restriction, so that the energy flows more freely through the
body. For example, if one has frequent stiffness in the hands, as I do, Reiki frees the energy
restriction with the hands.
An example that Anderson commonly uses during her seminars, regarding what Reiki can and
cannot do, involves the common skin burn. Anderson maintains that in some cases of a Reiki
treated minor burn: "You don't end up with any blistering and sometimes, it heals pretty rapidly,"
stated Anderson.
I did find the history of Reiki to be a bit shrouded, as warned by Anderson and others. While
some Web sites and other sources I spoke to yielded separate, and vaugely similar results,
Anderson and many others maintain that the modality came about as a central life discovery of
Dr. (substituting Sensei, not implying a professional medical title) Mikao Usui.
Usui passed this information onto a Dr. Hayashi, MD, who clinically set and determined specific
positioning and the formal processes used today. From Hayashi and many others, the system
developed and extended to the West.
While Hayashi and others have developed clinical theroy and practice of Reiki over many years,
Anderson stress it should not be used in place of conventional emergency medicine, but rather,
as an assistant to the healing process.
"It works on a holistic level- Reiki is helping people go deeper into the root of an out-of balance
state," stated Anderson, adding it is meant to be non-invasive (subjects need not even be
touched if they choose) and gentle.
Among those at the seminar looking to go deeper into their own restriction on energy flow, while
going through medical treatment, was Kelly Pomrinke, of Harleysville. "I was diagnosed with
advance breast cancer last year," said Pomrinke. "I came across Reiki through the breast cancer
coordinator at Grand View Hospital."
Pomrinke involved herself in Reiki to assist in the healing process. She was looking for a way to
ease pain brought about by chemotherapy and other cancer treatment side effects." "Initially I
came while I was in chemo. I walked away relaxed and having energy." said Pomrinke. "I found
Reiki helped me balance my mind."
Anderson wants people interested in Reiki to focus on keeping it in mind, when treating ailments
that may also be chronic, which is where my treatment focused. For some time, I have , like
many, deal with chronic lower back and neck pain, tightness in my knees and hands, and other
chronic "nuisance" ailments. Going into my session, Anderson agreed that these would be
focuses of my treatment.
To start, lying flat on my back in a very hospitable and relaxing environment, Anderson
determined where restrictions in my own energy flow lay. She determined that several of my own
Chakras points were either misaligned or restricted and proceeded to work on freeing those
perspective flows. Anderson pushed and pulled on my hands and legs, just below the knees for
a good portion of my session. "The purpose of which was to help assist in the release of tension
held in those areas. " added Anderson.
Through other channeling and other light massage, I was given release of slight lower back pain ,
which lasted for some time. My neck pain, however, was the result of a long-term problem and
was not affected by the treatment. An affect on a long-term ailment, said Anderson, often
requires repeat sessions. Stiffness in my hands was completely resolved short-term, which was a
surprising development considering Reiki worked where more than a few medical suggestions
have failed.
Anderson stressed, after our session the advice that Reiki tends not to be a quick fix. "If
someone is looking for a gentle way to help maintain balance, relieve daily stress or to have
something they can do in a first aid situation, learning Reiki is easy and does not required any
special equipment: it can be done anywhere and any time" encouraged Anderson.
