Spanking the FDA

The FDA released a report that silver fillings are not harmful in dental care in yet another
of their stacking the deck “studies” about two weeks ago. Mainstream media lackeys of
the FDA reported, “silver fillings not harmful” based upon “dozens of studies” from
“experts” (so called) and quoting the FDA that “no significant new information” indicated
mercury to be harmful to dental patients.

Your first clue that “honesty is not the best policy” in the polluted mainstreams of
government, medical/dental groups and media is their favored use of the term “silver
fillings” to refer to the most common dental repair material. In their less dishonest
moments the material is called “amalgam”. That material in fact is mostly mercury.

The FDA expresses concern for mercury in fish that passes through your body. Concern
is also expressed regarding thermometers containing mercury that doesn’t even enter the
body. Yet the FDA wants you to believe that mercury intentionally placed in the head
permanently is no concern at all. Does the FDA also have a bridge for sale in Brooklyn?

The very first national dental society in America disbanded 150 years ago due to sharp
disagreement about the safety of mercury fillings. It was replaced with a new organization
that ignored the mercury issue. That organization was the American Dental Association
that continues with its head in the sand on this issue to this day.

As to “dozens of studies” it is true that more than one is plural so that the more than two
dozen though not even three dozen studies does constitute “dozens” … barely. Yet there
are so many more studies that were ignored in order to arrive at the deceptive decision
made by the FDA and promoted by major media sources.

The FDA routinely submits its conclusions to panels of outside advisors for evaluations.
These panels are seldom more than rubber stamps according to a Washington Post (WP)
article two weeks ago. The panel members usually agree unanimously with FDA
conclusions.

The panel reviewing the FDA paper on “silver fillings” (that are really mercury fillings)
voted against acceptance almost two to one. There were two different votes covering the
issue from two different perspectives and the vote was the same in each instance.

One vote concluded that the FDA did not objectively and plainly present the current
knowledge available about patient exposure to mercury and health effects thereof from
the most common dental fillings.

Another vote determined that the FDA conclusions were not reasonable because all
available data on the subject was not consulted and other issues where knowledge is
lacking were not noted.

“There are too many things we don’t know and too many things we have excluded,” said
panel member Michael Ashner, professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at Vanderbilt
University.

Sadly, the FDA seldom consents to outside panel decisions when disapproval is noted
according to the WP article of two weeks ago.

It is admitted that both chewing and brushing causes mercury vapors to be released from
the mercury/silver/amalgam fillings.

It is also admitted that mercury levels in blood, urine and body tissues rise the more
mercury fillings a person has.

Children – both born and unborn – are acknowledged as being more sensitive to mercury
exposure with its adverse reactions on the brain and the kidneys. Many other countries
already have banned mercury in dental fillings for pregnant women and children.

Will the FDA finally reverse its upholding of the status quo regarding toxic mercury in
common dental fillings?

It is likely that the FDA will just brush off this rare spanking much the same as the
belligerent bully does after a rare defeat.
