Avoiding EMF's in the Office
Avoiding EMFs in the Office
Note: The following excerpt was written in 1993, and may not reflect the characteristics of newer
CRT computer monitors.
"The Swedish National Institute of Occupational Health has suggested ten ways to reduce exposure
to EMFs [electromagnetic fields] in the office:
1. Buy low emission VDUs [visual display units] that comply with the Swedish Guidelines for
ELF and VLF emissions
2. Reduce the amount of time spent in front of VDUs
3. Create workplace designs that minimize VDU exposure
4. Fit VDU screens with filters [commonly referred to as mesh filters, mesh monitor filters, or
anti-static filters] that reduce ELF and VLF fields as well as electrostatic fields
5. Remove unnecessary electrical equipment, such as typewriters, electrical calculators and radios
from operators' work areas
6. Place photocopiers and printers outside the general work area
7. Switch from fluorescent to incandescent lights
8. Install equipment so that it is properly earthed
9. Turn off all equipment when it is not in use
10. Consider changing from cathode ray tube [CRT] VDUs to liquid crystal display [LCD] screens.
(VDT News January/February 1993).
To this list we would add the relatively simple remedy adopted by the US foundation The Fund for
the City of New York which has redesigned its offices so that all operators now sit at least 70cm
from their VDUs and approximately 1 metre from other terminals. Magnetic and electric field
strength is reduced with increasing distance from the source."
