Invitation: 24 Hour Candlelight Vigil Doylestown Peace Committee
24 HOUR CANDLELIGHT VIGIL - SEPTEMBER 29-30, 2006
The Peace Committee of Doylestown Friends Meeting is currently seeking an opportunity to talk
with Representative Michael Fitzpatrick about the war in Iraq, the delegation to consist of three
members of the meeting and two persons from mainline churches. The request is already in the
hands of his Doylestown staff. The date of the meeting will hopefully be established this week.
Consistent with The Declaration of Peace campaign of Pace e Bene and the Call for Freedom
from Fear issued by the Quaker lobby, Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), the
Peace Committee is planning a round the clock candlelight vigil on the sidewalk adjacent to his
Doylestown office at 60 Main Streeet. At least two vigilers would be in place every hour from 2 p.
m. Friday, September 29 to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 30.
There will be one sign and handouts as determined by the Peace Committee. Advice is being
received from the FCNL as to what legislative measures calling for withdrawal from Iraq are
currently before the Congress. FCNL is also providing information on how Fitzpatrick has voted
in the House this year. He will be informed of the purpose of the vigil.
This message is being sent to you because you are among those many persons (some with their
children) who have attended the weekly Tuesday evening vigils, or among those who may see
this one time event as an opportunity to witness for a change in the role of the United States in
the Iraq conflict. We invite you (and your children) to participate. My e-mail address is
lmckmill@verizon.net; phone number, 215-345-1714. Please indicate the hour or hours you
favor for your participation.
Appended to this message is the text of the letter sent to Congressman Fitzpatrick.
Prayerfully, for peace,
Larry Miller, Clerk

Dear Mr. Fitzpatrick,
I am among the many voters in your district who believe that the time has come for the United
States to disengage itself from the dreadful war in Iraq. According to the Department of Defense
the number of American soldiers killed is now 2656. Tens of thousands have been physically
wounded or traumatized. The total number of Iraqi civilians killed is an estimated 100,000.
Consider also the cost of the war. The United States spends $6 billion a month fighting the war,
a total of more than $226 billion dollars so far. In every corner of the US, community programs
are being cut, from libraries to hospitals to transportation. Meanwhile the US deficit continues to
skyrocket, building a massive debt for future generations of Americans.
Many of us in Bucks County actively working for peace are joining in The Declaration of Peace
movement which calls for a comprehensive end to the US war in Iraq. We are urging our
Congressional representatives to adopt a “bring the troops home now” position and to establish
a concrete, comprehensive withdrawal plan no later than September 21, International Peace Day.
We appreciate and recognize the dilemmas that might arise from a change in the administration’s
present “stay the course” position, but we feel deeply that it is morally wrong to continue this
war. In the interest of publicly emphasizing our deep feelings about this issue we are organizing
a special round of peace vigils in Doylestown.
In a few days I shall be in touch with your Doylestown office to arrange for an opportunity for five
of us to lay our concerns before you.
Sincerely yours,
Larry Miller
