Creating Sacred Space
Author: Susan Anderson
Creating sacred space is about creating an environment that is filled with energy that supports, uplifts,
comforts and transforms our inner and outer awareness as well as our surroundings for the highest good.
We all have a need for space exclusively our own to which we can retreat. This can be done on an inner or
outer level. Going inside, through visualization or meditation, we can enter a sanctuary we have created.
Outwardly, we can do the same thing, by creating an area we are drawn to or have selected for this purpose.
The purpose varies why we choose to make sacred space. It may become a place for meditation, prayer,
reading, contemplation, or creative activity. The reasons are unique and personal.
When we designate a particular area, as our sacred space and use that space regularly, the energy builds
up in that spot over time. The space becomes energized due to the intention as well as the activities that are
performed in that area. So in essence, we are connected to working with the Divine Source.
Below are some suggestions that may give you ideas on ways to create a sacred space of your own...
1. Searching for Your Space
A sacred space can be as small or as large as you wish to make it. Look for an area at your home that
can be used for this purpose. It could be an extra room you have available, a spot outside when the
weather is more cooperative, or it could be something as small as a walk-in closet in the house, or a
corner of a room. Look around, then ask yourself, What area draws or pulls at me?"
2. Clearing the Clutter
Once you have selected your space, clear the area of any existing clutter. A cluttered area is a major
energy drainer. I once heard cutter referred to as energy constipation! When we are surrounded
by a mess, we tend to feel overwhelmed and distracted. Clutter produces stuck energy which negatively
effects our lives--mentally, physically, and emotionally. Living in this type of environment, we tend to
manifest more of the same--in our body and mind, feeling as if we are stuck in our life. Not exactly the
environment we are trying to create for our sacred space. So clear the clutter, and feel the new energy
of your space.
3. Use of Your Sacred Space
Decide what this space will be used for and who can use it. Set your intention for this area after you have
made the decision.
4. Personalizing Your Area
Place some pleasing visuals, kinesthetics, sounds and scents in your area. You may have a sound
machine, or a tape with soothing music, maybe a waterfall, some candles, incense and meaningful objects
or pictures. Placing some personal items that you may have received from friends and family members,
surrounds you with loving memories.
5. Honoring Your Space
Once your space is in place, you may want to honor it by doing some type of ritual. This may be giving a
prayer of gratitude, or blessing the area in whatever way best aligns with your belief system. You will find
yourself drawn to this sacred space more and more as you seek the peace and restfulness it provides.
