Peering through the Hourglass
Author: Susan Anderson

In today's fast paced world, we are always on the go, trying to beat the clock. We are driven
from the moment we get up in the morning until our head hits the pillow at night. Our mind is
always buzzing-- we have our job to think about, the kids to worry over, appointments to
keep, schedules to follow, the house to care for and on and on it goes. The light at the end
of the tunnel seems to distant, just a faint flicker that eludes us.

Relaxation for many means snatching a few minutes while waiting for others to complete an
activity or finish an appointment. Then we begin to notice those signals that our body sends
urging us to slow down and take care of ourselves. When they first appear, they tend to do
so quietly, which allows us to continue to ignore them. We may contemplate taking action,
but then reality sets in, pushing the awareness aside for another time or promoting us to
take a pain reliever just so we can get through the next few hours. But our body has a
greater intelligence than we give it credit for!

Not unlike a child who refuses to accept your initial answer to a request, it keeps coming
back with louder and louder signals until we can no longer block out its screams. It is at this
point that we finally jump into action with a response. Suddenly the time we didn't have
available to care for our needs becomes a priority and we begin our search for health and
wellness.

Wellness is an ongoing journey, with many adventures and lessons along the way. Our
travels can be more enjoyable when we make a commitment to ourselves to nurture our
mind, body and spirit on a daily basis. Give yourself this gift of time, instead of waiting until
the eleventh hour to recognize its importance
